From handcrafted heirlooms and meaningful tributes to spontaneous moments of joy, every detail was thoughtfully woven together to create a wedding that felt effortlessly stylish, deeply personal and entirely their own.

'Living in a relatively small town, with so many mutual friends and both playing soccer, it was a wonder that it took us as long to meet as it did! But we finally met in 2017 when we both sat with a mutual friend to watch a local game of soccer and became good friends after that. The romance then sparked about 6 months later after we both attended an Illy concert with our friends.'

Bathed in soft spring light and overlooking the Tweed River, Jess and Matt's wedding at Ancora Weddings was a beautiful balance of timeless elegance and modern romance. A monochrome palette of black, white and champagne created a refined aesthetic, while woven pendants, crisp white florals and relaxed coastal styling gave the day an effortless warmth.

Every detail felt deeply considered, yet nothing overshadowed what mattered most—the joy of two people choosing one another after years of friendship, laughter and unwavering love. From hand-painted guest portraits to sentimental family heirlooms and one unforgettable haircut between courses, this celebration was filled with thoughtful surprises that perfectly reflected the couple behind it.

From Friendship to Forever

Although Jess and Matt grew up in the same small town, shared mutual friends and both played soccer, it wasn't until 2017 that they finally met while watching a local match together. Friendship came first, before romance quietly blossomed six months later at an Illy concert with friends. After six years together, Matt planned a proposal that seemed almost too perfect to have been scripted. A drive through Northern New South Wales led to bakery treats from Cubby Bakehouse, dolphin spotting at Cabarita Lookout, and an afternoon walk along Lennox Head beach where a "mother photographing her daughter" turned out to be photographer Cat Smith waiting to capture the moment Matt got down on one knee. Champagne followed, sunset portraits, and as if the day couldn't become more memorable, the first stranger to congratulate them happened to be Abbie Chatfield.

A Modern Take on Timeless Romance

Wanting a wedding that felt both classic and contemporary, Jess and Matt embraced a sophisticated palette of black, white and greenery. Guests were invited to wear black, creating an incredibly elegant atmosphere, while the bridesmaids' champagne gowns added warmth against the crisp monochrome styling. The reception space at Ancora Weddings was transformed into a light-filled coastal dream.

Long timber tables dressed with flowing white linen runners, delicate white florals by Moss N Stone, bentwood chairs and woven pendant lighting created an understated luxury that echoed the relaxed beauty of Northern New South Wales. Having visited the café attached to Ancora many times before, the venue already held special memories, while its Mediterranean-inspired architecture reminded the couple of Greece—the destination of their very first overseas holiday together.

The Beauty Was in the Meaning

Jess and Matt filled their wedding with meaningful touches that told their story. Jess's grandmother lovingly handmade her pearl veil, delicately embroidering the couple's initials into the fabric. Her late father's wedding ring became her "something borrowed", while Matt surprised her on the morning of the wedding with the gift of a star named in her honour.

Jess also designed every piece of stationery herself through Pizzazz Signage, including a linen bar sign dedicated to their beloved dogs, Coco and Freya, and a reserved ceremony chair honouring her late father. Even the witnesses were a surprise, with each grandparent unexpectedly invited to sign the marriage certificate—a moment neither will ever forget.

Surprises That Made the Day

Some of the day's most memorable moments were the ones no one saw coming. Knowing how much Matt admired live wedding artists, Jess secretly organised Hannah Megan Art to create beautiful watercolour guest portraits throughout the reception. Guests left with bespoke keepsakes that quickly became one of the highlights of the day. Then came perhaps the biggest surprise of all. After changing into her reception dress by SIR., Jess disappeared with her hairdresser, Cropt—who also happened to be her former roommate—to cut off her signature long hair. With the bathrooms full, the dramatic transformation took place in the Ancora carpark before Jess made her grand re-entrance to a completely stunned Matt. His expression, says everything. Capturing Every Emotion

Photographer Brontë McVeigh documented the day with an editorial softness that perfectly complemented the couple's aesthetic. Every image feels effortless—natural light, genuine emotion and thoughtful composition allowing each moment to breathe without ever feeling staged. Alongside Brontë, second shooter Renué Studio assisted throughout the day, while Twelve08 Studios created a timeless wedding film the couple say they'll watch forever. House of Figs Content Creation delivered beautifully curated behind-the-scenes moments within just 48 hours, giving family and friends an immediate glimpse back into the celebration.

Choosing Each Other, Every Day

For Jess and Matt, marriage isn't simply about a wedding day. It's about choosing one another every single day—through ordinary moments, difficult seasons and everything in between. Choosing kindness over being right. Choosing to keep dating each other long after the wedding has passed. Choosing the small gestures that quietly remind the other person they are loved. That philosophy could be felt throughout every part of their celebration. Their advice to future couples is simple: create opportunities to spend genuine time together.

Hosting a welcome dinner the night before meant they could fully immerse themselves in their wedding day, and by making a conscious effort to hold hands wherever they went, they experienced every moment side by side. A wedding to leave a lasting impression because it feels deeply personal. Jess and Matt's celebration was undoubtedly a beautifully curated day where every thoughtful detail reflected a relationship built on friendship, laughter, family and choosing one another, every single day.
