SWITZERLAND / Castello di Morcote: A Centuries-Old Castle, Organic Wine Estate and Destination Wedding Venue

Castello di Morcote Weddings / A Medieval Castle Above Lake Lugano

A wedding venue that feels beautiful, and a place that seems to have been created for your love story. Perched high above the shimmering waters of Lake Lugano in Switzerland's Ticino region, Castello di Morcote is one of the latter — a centuries-old castle, organic wine estate and destination wedding setting where medieval architecture meets the effortless glamour of Italian Switzerland.

Set within the picturesque village of Vico Morcote, the estate encompasses terraced vineyards, olive groves, woodland and pastures, with the 15th-century castle standing at its heart. Up to 160 guests in the marquee; intimate celebrations are also available in the castle and wine cellar spaces.

A Castle with a View

At the centre of the estate is the medieval castle itself, whose historic walls surround courtyards and gardens overlooking Lake Lugano and the surrounding mountains. It is an extraordinary backdrop for couples seeking a destination wedding with a sense of history and grandeur, while the natural landscape brings an unmistakable feeling of tranquillity.

The castle garden provides an especially enchanting setting for ceremonies and cocktails, allowing guests to celebrate outdoors surrounded by vineyards and panoramic views. For couples dreaming of an intimate celebration, the historic castle offers an atmospheric setting, while the estate's larger spaces allow the festivities to continue well into the evening.

The Marquee

For the wedding reception, the estate's impressive marquee offers a beautifully versatile alternative to the castle itself. Guarded by the medieval fortress and surrounded by lake and mountain views, the space can be transformed to suit the aesthetic of each celebration — from sophisticated and understated to romantic and whimsical.

Available from April through October, the marquee can accommodate up to 160 guests, making it possible to host a larger destination wedding without sacrificing the extraordinary setting. Imagine long tables dressed in linen and candlelight, flowers spilling across the tablescape and the silhouette of the castle providing a dramatic backdrop as the evening settles over Lake Lugano.

A Wine Estate Wedding

One of Castello di Morcote's most distinctive qualities is that it is more than a historic venue — it is a working organic wine estate. The 150-hectare Tenuta includes seven hectares of terraced vineyards, with vines cultivated on steep, south-facing slopes between 400 and 500 metres above sea level. The estate has been cared for by the Gianini family for four generations, with its wines expressing the distinctive terroir of Ticino. For wedding celebrations, estate wines can be paired with the dining experience, bringing an authentic taste of the region to the reception.

Stay at Relais Castello di Morcote

For couples wanting to extend the experience beyond a single day, the nearby Relais Castello di Morcote offers an intimate place to stay. The 17th-century property was originally a convent before becoming a residence for patrician families. In 2019, it was transformed into a boutique hotel with twelve individually designed rooms. Its understated elegance and proximity to the wine estate make it an especially appealing option for couples and guests wanting to remain immersed in the atmosphere of the village.

A Destination Wedding, Beautifully Considered

The estate also offers two restaurants for wedding-related celebrations. Ristorante La Sorgente provides an intimate fine-dining experience centred around local ingredients, while Ristorante Vicania, set higher on the wooded hillside, offers a country-chic setting for pre-wedding meals, rehearsal dinners and other gatherings.

With its combination of medieval architecture, vineyard landscapes, exceptional views and Swiss-Italian hospitality, Castello di Morcote offers something rather rare: the romance of a historic European castle with the relaxed beauty of a lakeside destination.

For couples searching for a wedding venue in Switzerland that feels both grand and deeply intimate, Castello di Morcote is an extraordinary setting — a place where centuries of history, spectacular scenery and la dolce vita come together above Lake Lugano.
